Stocard and Klarna – What You Need to Know

Here at WalletWell we have been getting an increasing large amount of questions about Stocard. Klarna acquired Stocard awhile ago but it seems that Klarna has integrated Stocard’s system into Klarna’ website and app this past week.

I wasn’t aware of this acquisition of Klarna until Stocard users started asking questions, so I thought it was a good idea to do some research and provide some explanations and context. Upon further investigation, I discovered that Klarna is a Swedish bank that provides online financial services such as payment solutions for online storefronts. The meaning of Klarna in Swedish is “to clear” or “to solve”, which reflects the company’s mission to simplify the payment process for consumers and businesses. This acquisition by Stocard signifies a strategic move to expand their services and provide a more seamless shopping experience for their users.

Hopefully this is useful to Stocard users and if you have any questions or comments about Stocard and Klarna, please leave them below.

What is Stocard?

Stocard is, or was, a convenient way to digital store multiple loyalty cards and payment methods.

Stocard transforms would put all loyalty cards into one convenient app. This mean you didn’t need to physically have the cards available, because who wants to carry all of those loyalty cards in a wallet?

The Stocard app would allow you to scan a loyalty cards barcode. It would digitally keep it in the app and could be pulled when at checkout at any store. The app would store everything from grocery store points to airline miles, keeping them organized and ready to use.

Stocard was quite popular had boasted about 60 million users across 45 different countries when Klarna acquired it.

How did Stocard make money?

The app would send users personalized offers and alerts about nearby deals. I’m sure the thinking was if you store this many loyalty cards in an app, you are likely a bargain hunter.

When did Klarna buy Stocard?

Klarna acquired Stocard back in July 2021, and it was announced and finalized in April 2022. This marked several acquisitions Klarna has made over the years to compete in the fintech industry.

The Stocard acquisition allows Klarna to tap into Stocard’s vast customer base as well as the the deal and bargain data they have collected over the years.

How much did Klarna pay for Stocard?

The deal’s value remains undisclosed, but industry experts estimate it was worth hundreds of millions of euros.

Klarna’s decision to purchase Stocard aligned with its strategy to expand its services beyond BNPL payments.

Why did Klarna buy Stocard?

By integrating Stocard’s loyalty program management capabilities into the Klarna ecosystem this vastly expands the amount of data and potential Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) loans the Swedish fintech company can offer.

Here’s why Klarna saw value in purchasing Stocard:

  1. Expanding user base: Stocard brought over 60 million consumers across 45 markets to Klarna’s platform.
  2. Enhanced retail experience: The merger allowed Klarna to offer services beyond payments, the loyalty card management.
  3. Data insights: Stocard’s user data provided Klarna with valuable information about consumer behavior and preferences.
  4. Competitive advantage: The acquisition positioned Klarna as a more versatile player in the fintech space, competing with other digital wallets and payment providers.
  5. Synergy between services: Klarna users gained access to loyalty card management, while Stocard users benefited from Klarna’s payment options.
  6. Market expansion: The deal helped Klarna strengthen its presence in key European markets where Stocard had a strong foothold.
  7. Technology integration: Stocard’s digital wallet technology complemented Klarna’s existing infrastructure, enabling new features and capabilities.

Klarna feels the BNPL payment solutions along with Stocard’s digital wallet technology, will provide a more comprehensive and seamless shopping experience for users.

Essentially it was a strategic move to expand, the goal of most companies.

How can I access my Stocard Account?

Any Stocard app users will need to move over digital loyalty cards stored within 2 weeks of this article being published. The Stocard app will no longer be updated and stop working after that.

While the acquisition of Stocard was 2 years ago, Klarna kept the Stocard app operational all this time. Going forward this will no longer be the case.

If you want to keep using using Stocard, you have to move over to the Klarna app. When you login to Stocard there will be a prompt and instructions on how to transfer all your info over to the Klarna app.

The integration will simplify shopping and being able to use Klarna as a payment method.

If you have any trouble moving over your Stocard account, I recommend you reach out to Klarna customer service.

What do Stocard users think?

From reading what Stocard users have said on Reddit and Twitter, they feel like Klarna isn’t as good and this is not a positive move.

Stocard in the Klarna app will no longer have an Apple Watch capability. The Apple Watch app apparently was quite popular for Stocard users.

Some have migrated to other similar loyalty card apps. It will be interesting to see how Klarna handles moving Stocard users over.

Are you a Stocard user? Will you be moving over to Klarna?

  1. Stocard was the best loyalty card app. Too bad it’s being killed.

I’ve just switched to supercards because of its import function, simplicity and widget+ apple watch support but there some other good apps out there.

Either way – Klarna app doesn’t even come close when it comes to the loyalty cards festure

    • Highly doubtful Klarna cares about the loyalty card app of Stocard. Like I said above they bought it for the vast customer and deal flow data.

What will you do when Klarna buys Supercards?

  2. I agree. I have tried the Klarna incarnation of Stocard and don’t find it comes even close in terms of convenience or simplicity.
None of the supposed replacements come close either but at least they are not such blatant attempts at marketing i.e. not trying to sell a payments system in disguise.
Google wallet is one of the better alternatives if you don’t add any payment cards but not as good a Stocard.

  3. I found the Klarna log in impossible, trying to save my stored cards. Time to start over. Painful pain in the butt.
They could have send an emeil warning, but want to grift the stocard users to the max.
Look elsewhere, don’t be a sucker.
